KARACHI:

An angry mob set a vehicle on fire on Rashid Minhas Road on Thursday after it allegedly hit a minor girl and tried to escape.

A sports utility vehicle (SUV), bearing registration BD-0928, hit a girl, said to be around six years old, near Jauhar Morr and sped away. Motorists who witnessed the incident chased the SUV and intercepted it at the Millennium Mall intersection. The mob manhandled the driver, Hammad, and set the vehicle on fire.

The driver was rescued as the police arrived at the scene and took him into custody. He has been locked up in Sharae Faisal police station. He claims it was an accident and he was afraid that people would beat him up. "That is why I drove away," he told the police.

Earlier, false reports were circulated that the girl succumbed to injuries. However, she was discharged from the hospital after treatment. An FIR is yet to be registered as no one has approached the police for it yet.
