Councillor election: LHC maintains objection

The petitioner said Hassaan had already held public office as the vice chairman of the Lahore Development Authority

LAHORE:

Justice Muhammad Khalid Mehmood Khan of Lahore High Court (LHC) on Wednesday turned down a request to entertain a petition challenging the candidature of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N’s) Khwaja Ahmad Hassaan’s election as a councillor.

Earlier, the LHC registrar had returned the petition of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Zubair Khan Niazi with the objection that the notification of Hassaan’s election had not been attached with the petition.

On Wednesday, the justice sustained the objection and refused to overrule it. The petitioner said Hassaan had already held public office as the vice chairman of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA). He said he was also involved in local government as a director of the LWMC. The petitioner said that under Section 27 of the Local Government Act 2013, a person who was in the service of a statutory body controlled by a provincial government was not eligible to contest local government elections.
