KARACHI:

The special anti-corruption court issued on Friday warrants for the arrest of Sindh education secretary Fazlullah Pechuho in a graft case.

Special judge Gulshan Ara Chandio also ordered the anti-corruption establishment (ACE) to arrest and produce the accused in the court on March 9.

The court had initiated proceedings on a direct complaint lodged by Muhammad Mithal, a high school teacher.

In his complaint, Mithal had alleged that fake appointments and promotions were rampant in the provincial education department. Corrupt practices such as fake appointments and illegal promotions were being made under the directives of the secretary through his front men, the complainant has alleged.

Mithal stated that the secretary had dismissed him and other teachers despite fleecing large sums of money from them to keep their jobs, and made fake appointments in their place after receiving huge bribes. He informed that the ACE had initiated an inquiry against the secretary and others for their involvement in corrupt practices six months ago, but no action had been taken against them so far. He argued that the secretary had misused his authority, which is an offence under anti-corruption and other laws. The court issued a bailable warrant for Pechuho's arrest, and ordered the ACE to arrest and produce the accused on March 9, 2016.

Personal grudge?

Pechuho has said he does not know the factual status of the case and details of the arrest warrant. A teacher named Mithal has filed a complaint and approached the anti-corruption department directly, he informed at the sidelines of an event on Friday.

Mithal was suspended when someone complained about his fake appointment but the Sindh chief secretary reinstated him at a lower grade after a personal hearing, Pechuho claimed.  He further revealed that the chief secretary admitted that Mithal confessed in front of him regarding fake orders of his appointment as a high school teacher.
