In flames: Labourer killed trying to put out blaze

The workers first tried to put the blaze out themselves instead of informing the fire brigade department

A labourer was killed and four others were injured while trying to put a blaze out at their godown in Site area on Tuesday.



A fire broke out at an iron scrap godown located at Haroonabad in Site Industrial Area. Police and firefighters said that the labourers working at the godown, instead of informing the fire brigade department, first attempted to put the blaze out themselves and then informed the fire brigade department when five labourers sustained burns during the attempt.

The injured labourers were taken to the Burns Ward of Civil Hospital, Karachi, where one labourer succumbed to injuries during treatment. The deceased was later identified as Mehtab while the injured were identified as Allah Baksh, Imam Baksh, Munawar and Long Khan. A fire brigade spokesperson said that while the actual cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained, it seems that the blaze erupted due to a short-circuit.
