PESHAWAR: Unidentified armed men shot dead a leader of the Shia sect Monday, near Peshawar's Kohati Gate.

According to reports, Malik Iftikhar Ali Haideri died on the spot as armed men on a motorcycle opened fire at him.

Police officials arrived at the scene soon after the attack, where the area was cordoned off and investigation commenced.

Haideri was among the most prominent Shia leaders in the region. Funeral prayers for the deceased will be offered in Yakatoot area's Mohalla Marvi Ha.

In a separate incident, two people were killed as an explosive device went off in Bannu's Hawaid area in the wee hours of Monday.

"Explosive material was planted inside a repair shop in Zandi Akbar Khan area," police officials said, adding that both victims were owners of the cycle repair shop.

Police immediately cordoned off the area where investigation is underway.
