An alleged commander of a banned militant outfit and half a dozen other suspects were arrested during ongoing targeted raids in parts of the city on Monday.


The alleged commander was arrested during a targeted raid conducted by law enforcement agencies in the Baghdadi locality of Lyari. Sources in the police said that the raid was conducted on a tip-off by intelligence agencies at the suspect's hideout, adding that security forces later took the suspect along with them to an undisclosed location.

The suspected commander was identified as Yasin, alias Pappu, an alleged commander of a banned militant outfit. His accomplice, Ali alias Mama, was killed in a previous police encounter in Preedy.

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) claim to have arrested two alleged extortionists during a raid conducted in Korangi. The suspects were identified as Shafi Alam and Rehan. SIU chief SP Farooq Awan said that the accused persons were involved in various cases of extortion, adding that they recently opened fire on a car belonging to a factory owner, Samad Ali, after he refused to pay Rs1 million in extortion money about two weeks ago.
