Sunday bazaars: Vegetable prices soar due to short supply
Prices of 15 vegetables,out of 27, rise

Vegetable prices rose in the Sunday bazaars due to reduced supply and absence of effective price control.
According to the price list issued by market committees, prices of 15 vegetables, out of 27, rose over the week.
The biggest hike - 200 per cent - was witnessed in the price of cauliflower as compared to last week. Its price rose by Rs9 to 12 per kilogramme. Methi (fenugreek) showed a hike of over 62 per cent to reach Rs10 to 13 per kg. Prices of farmed and desi varieties of green chili rose by 40 and 29 per cent respectively. Farmed green chilis were available for Rs30 to 35 per kg. Desi green chilis sold for Rs40 to 45 per kg.
Capsicum prices rose by 35 per cent to reach Rs45 to 54 per kg. Cabbage prices showed a rise of 30 per cent. It was sold for Rs10 to 13 per kg. Prices of Chinese lemon rose by 29 per cent to reach 35 to 45 per kg. Price of brinjals, spinach and green peas showed a raise of 20 per cent as compared to last week. Brinjals sold for Rs25 to 30, spinach for Rs12 to 18 and green peas for Rs30 to 36.
Cucumber, saag, Chinese ginger, garlic, and bitter gourd prices showed 5 to 19 per cent rise. Cucumbers sold for Rs55 to 65 per kg; saag for Rs13 to 18 per kg; bitter gourd for Rs90 to 95 per kg and Chinese garlic for Rs200 to 210 per kg.
Mongray, Chinese and Thai ginger varieties, desi garlic, carrot, taro roots (arvi), turnips, tomatoes and radishes were vegetables whose prices remained the same. Mongray were available for Rs18 to 20 per kg, ginger (China) for Rs90 to 100, ginger (Thailand) for Rs55 to 60, desi garlic for Rs215 to 220 per kg, carrot for Rs10 to 14, taro roots for Rs40 to 45 per kg, turnip for Rs7 to 10 per kg, tomato for Rs27 to 31 per kg and radishes for Rs8 to 12 per kg.
Onion, potato and okra prices declined by 3 to 11 per cent. Okra sold for Rs70 to 75 per kg, potato for Rs10 to 12 per kg and onion for Rs30 to 33 per kg.
Grapefruit prices rose by 33 per cent. It sold for Rs15 to 20 per piece. Citrus (malta plain) prices rose by 11 per cent. It was available for Rs45 to 50 per dozen. The price of premium quality kinow grew by 9 per cent to reach Rs70 to Rs76 per dozen. Second-grade kinow sold between Rs35 and Rs40 per dozen. Sweet potato prices were higher by six per cent. It was available for Rs25 to 34 per kg. Pomegranate (kandahari) was available for Rs165 to 175 per kg. Prices of papaya also rose by two per cent.
It was available for Rs100 to 112 per kg.
