KARACHI:
Dilapidated roads and sewage has become a common site for commuters on Tipu Sultan Road, situated in Karachi Development Authority (KDA) Scheme-I near Karsaz.

A large part of the road seems to be cursed as despite being fixed repeatedly, the repairs barely last for long.

Sewage has been constantly creating obstacles, especially for rickshaw drivers who cannot think of crossing the road as it is sloppy and deeply covered in layers of sewage.

Residents lament that it does not seem that they live in one of the posh areas of the city. A resident, Riazuddin, said there is a problem with sewers under the road but the officials of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) have not taken it seriously.

Another resident, Saeed Rizvi, said, “Only God knows the solution to the problems of this road. We are tired of filing complaints.” He also claimed that they have been witnessing the road like this for a long time.

Vehicles, particularly motorcycles, either divert to nearby streets or try their best to cross the affected part using the footpath. A motorcyclist, Shaheer, said he has no hopes from the government. “They [government officials] cruise in Pajeros. How can they understand what we suffer from?” he said.

Talking to The Express Tribune, assistant commissioner (East) Mohammad Ali Zaidi said this issue came to his notice four days ago. He claimed that he has forwarded recommendations regarding the matter to the commissioner’s office and soon the problem will be resolved. The KWSB spokesperson admitted that this issue has been under the notice of the board’s authorities and repair work will commence in a day or two.

KWSB East sub-engineer Aijaz Ahmed explained that the sewage line beneath the road has been broken. “We are starting the work. It will take another 48 hours to be completed,” he said.
