KARACHI:

A district and sessions court awarded on Saturday death sentence to two militants, affiliated with the banned outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba, for killing a man for sectarian reasons around five years ago.

The additional district and sessions judge of District Malir, Shafi Muhammad Pirzada, handed down capital punishment to Maulvi Inayatullah and Muhammad Zakaria. They were found guilty of murdering Syed Ameer Hussain Shah, who was said to be the caretaker of an imambargah.

Shah was gunned down in Shah Latif Town in January 2010, when he was going to offer Fajr prayers at a mosque in the locality. According to the prosecution, the victim, before his assassination, had filed complaints against the two militants for allegedly threatening him over his beliefs.

During the trial, the court examined eight witnesses and scrutinised evidences, such as post-mortem and forensic reports and observed that they were sufficient to establish the offence against the accused. The accused were on bail and after the verdict, were taken back into the custody.
