There’s good news for those who always wanted to own the DeLorean from Back of the Future trilogy as the iconic car is back in production after a hiatus of almost 35 years.

The DeLorean Motor Company is aiming to build 300 units of the iconic sports car-turned-time machine, replicating its famous 1982 model in Texas, US.

The decision comes after the US government recently passed a legislation exempting low-volume “replica” car manufacturers from the safety requirements applied to mass car producers.

DeLorean CEO Stephen Wynne said they are not going to change the car’s appearance.

"There's no reason to change the appearance. As we go into the programme, we'll decide what areas need to be freshened up," he said.

The 2017 model will be recreated from the original blueprints, retaining its signature gull-wing doors. The engine will be bought from an outside supplier.

The refurbished model will be available between $45,000 to $55,000, while a brand new car will cost about $100,000.

According to Time, only about 9,000 DeLoreans were produced during the automaker’s short-lived run during the 1980s.
