ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister of Planning, Development and Reform Ahsan Iqbal has asked the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to formulate a five-year business plan by outlining clear objectives for transforming it into a leading transportation company of the region.

“Pakistan is poised to become a trade and commerce hub in the region and NLC should prepare itself to take advantage of future opportunities,” he said.

Chairing the 57th meeting of the National Logistics Board at the Ministry of Planning on Monday, Iqbal directed the NLC to identify and set medium to long-term targets for enhancing its operational capability and efficiency in meeting trucking and logistic needs.

Pakistan’s trade logistics need urgent overhaul

He said this would be particularly important in the backdrop of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which would generate enormous opportunities in the area of logistics.

The board authorised the NLC to hire a well-reputed management consultancy firm for framing the five-year business plan. It also accorded approval for the audit of accounts for financial years 2011-12 and 2012-13. “NLC is playing an important role in national development and should modernise its fleet for providing efficient services,” Iqbal said.

He called NLC the backbone of logistics industry which should focus on its core business. “It should align itself with development portfolio of the country by anticipating future requirements in the logistics sector.”

The minister noted that the CPEC would create enormous opportunities in freight and logistics and the NLC could benefit from these through improving its organisational capability. He directed the company to explore transportation opportunities on western route of the economic corridor as well as in Gwadar, which was the key to the mega project. “CPEC … will make the western route an important trade corridor for the upcountry and Afghanistan,” said Iqbal.

Pakistan hotbed of opportunities

He also issued directives for preparing the National Logistics Framework and Trucking Policy at the earliest for bringing improvement in the trucking and logistics sector of the country.
