KARACHI:
The Joint Action Committee of Pakistan International Airlines has announced its next course of action and will start protests from Tuesday at the head office of the airline.
Previously, a series of protests had started from December 5, 2015 against the planned privatisation of the airline. These halted only after a resolution was passed against privatisation in the Senate.
However, the government passed the privatisation bill of the airline in the National Assembly last week after which the joint action committee decided to hold nationwide protests.
Joint Action Committee Secretary Obaidullah Khan, while talking to The Express Tribune said, “We have presented four demands: the resolution passed in the National Assembly be rescinded, aviation policy be reviewed, unions be involved in re-strengthening the airline and privatisation be deemed intolerable.”
Khan added, “We will shut down the head office [today] and stage a protest. We will also close down all flight operations from February 2.”
PIA spokesperson Daniyal Gillani said, “We have requested the Joint Action Committee to review its decision. This will only add to the losses of the airline.”
