KARACHI: Ever since its conception to its release, director Quentin Tarantino’s latest cinematic venture, The Hateful Eight, has had a troublesome journey. For instance, just a few weeks following the filmmaker’s announcement, the screenplay for the movie was secretly leaked over the internet. And this was just the beginning! The problems Tarantino and his team had to endure did not seem to subside and even after the film’s release, its leaked prints were made available just hours after.

And now that The Hateful Eight is finally playing in cinemas across the world, its release date has been pushed back by two weeks in Pakistan. The movie was initially expected to open on January 14 but will now do so on January 29 instead. In fact, even the new release date seems tentative as Khorem Gultasab, general manager of Super Cinemas in Lahore told The Express Tribune that, “As of now, they do not know the exact release date of the movie.”

While cinema-owners continue to be in the dark as to the exact reason behind this delay, a source revealed that this is normal for the film’s distribution company, HKC Entertainment. “The distributors usually make deals for these movies and then decide upon the release of each film by gauging the performances of other films,” explained the source. “They have even bought the distribution rights for Kung Fu Panda 3. But instead of releasing it in January, they would be doing it on March 11. By that time, the film will already be available on DVD and television.” Another movie which is expected to release on January 29 is Leonardo Dicaprio’s The Revenant, but according to cinema owners, the film has yet to be censored.

As of now, even the Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) has not received a request for certification, CBFC Chairperson Mobashir Hasan told The Express Tribune.
