Voluntary return: Masoom Shah on judicial remand

An accountability court sent former chief minister’s special assistant, Syed Masoom Shah popularly known as SMS, on a judicial remand on Thursday. Shah held this office during the previous government’s tenure. He was arrested for accumulating illegal assets by misusing his authority. National Accountability Bureau had initiated an enquiry against him. He was arrested after its completion and his case is pending in court. Shah had also filed for a voluntary return plea application, worth Rs250 million. The first instalment is said to have been paid while NAB accepted a bank guarantee for the payment of the remaining amount. Shah was ordered to be produced before the court on January 27. On August 24, 2015, NAB Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa seized gold bars from the locker of Shah after he disclosed their location. On August 11, 2015, he was arrested over charges of corruption and having assets beyond his known sources of income.
