A former British soldier on Thursday avoided jail for trying to smuggle a four-year-old Afghan child out of a migrant camp in France, with a court ordering him to pay $1,085 if he repeats the offence.
Robert Lawrie, 49, had tried to smuggle the girl to England in his van last year, but was stopped before he left France.
