The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has accused the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and Sindh government for conniving to delay the election of mayors, deputy mayors and representatives of reserved seats.
"They are trying to woo independent candidates with the help of their authority, and also making sure that funds released for local government departments are utilised in haste so they [the provincial government] get kickbacks," alleged Navaid Shamsi, the party's Hyderabad chief.
Shamsi, accompanied by the party's provincial and national lawmakers, was speaking at a press conference on Monday.
Representatives of local bodies were elected from Hyderabad and 13 others districts of Sindh on November 19. The MQM leaders contend that the process of electing mayors and deputy mayors as well as representatives on reserved seats of women, minority, labour, peasant and youth should have been completed by now.
"From January 1, local councils should have started working but, regrettably even the date for these elections has not been announced," he lamented.
