PESHAWAR:

Khurshid Begum, the wife of Awami National Party (ANP) leader and former minister for Railways Haji Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, passed away after a prolonged illness on Wednesday.

A day earlier, she was rushed to a private hospital when her condition deteriorated rapidly.

Her funeral prayers will be offered 11am at Wazir Bagh on Thursday (today). Ghulam Bilour was a member of the National Assembly from NA-1 Peshawar and served as railways minister on two occasions. The couple lost their only son, Shabbir Ahmad Bilour, in a firing incident at a polling booth in Wazir Bagh during the 1997 general elections.

Ghulam’s brother Bashir Bilour was one of the leading voices against extremism before he was killed in a suicide attack. Bashir was a senior K-P minister and leader of ANP. During his life, the then president of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari, awarded Bashir Bilour the Tamgha-e-Shujaat for his services.
