They have been accused of misappropriation and embezzlement of TMA funds
KARACHI:
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Karachi, claimed to have apprehended four suspects for alleged misappropriation and embezzlement of funds of Matli taluka municipal administration (TMAs) in Badin district.
The arrested suspects were identified as Ghulam Mustafa Jahejo, Haq Nawaz Leghari, Feroz Hussain Memon and Shoaib Ahmed. According to the NAB Karachi spokesperson, several taluka municipal officers (TMO's) in Matli were allegedly found involved in corruption in various development schemes and the government funds were embezzled without executing any work on ground through bogus records.
Nandipur inquiry found Rs133b loss, says Asif
"The schemes pertaining to the tenure of Ahmed Khan Abro, Munawar Zareef and Tariq Hamed were scrutinised," said the spokesperson. Jahejo, former taluka officer (finance) misappropriated TMA funds to the tune of Rs5.3 million by authorising bogus payments. Leghari, former taluka officer embezzled Rs6.69 million, also by giving bogus payments as refund for security deposit to contractors. The accused, Memon, who was a contractor of alMehran Engineering Service, was the recipient of fraudulent payment of Rs2.61 million for work which was never carried out. The spokesperson said that thus a loss of Rs1.2 million was caused to the national exchequer. The accused, Ahmed, also a contractor, was illegally paid Rs4.2 million from the government exchequer.
Uphill task: Ending corruption requires collective effort, says NAB chief
"All four accused are in NAB's custody," claimed the spokesperson. One accused, Naveed Shahid, proprietor of Arain Memon Construction Company, has entered into plea bargain. NAB, Karachi, continues to carry out its responsibility diligently in arresting the corrupt officials involved in causing losses to the national exchequer and the public, added the spokesperson.
