Bollywood's obsession with the National Award

Looking at the recent past, it seems that the National Award has become the centre of attention for leading Bollywood celebrities.

Where prominent filmmakers have used their awards as weapons of protest against intolerance in India, leading actress Katrina Kaif has set it as her final target before getting hitched.

The latest superstar to join the bandwagon of this growing obsession is none other than the King of Bollywood himself. Shah Rukh Khan has made it an even bigger deal as the actor reveals plans to retire after receiving the award.

The Dilwale actor was asked if he hopes to sweep all awards when he showed interest in the most coveted honour. “I am just waiting for the National award as I have decided to retire after getting one," Hindustan Times quoted him as saying.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher and filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar took to Twitter to slam the 'Award Wapsi' move.

Meanwhile, Bollywood diva Katrina -- who is constantly badgered with questions regarding marriage plans with Ranbir Kapoor -- revealed her wedding plans saying, “As I was presuming what question you were going to ask me and you did ask me, I was thinking I would come up with a very good answer for this. I will get married once I win the National Award," reports India Today.

We realise the significance of this award, but still struggle to comprehend why one would base major life decisions around it.

Rangacharya Kulkarni | 9 years ago | Reply Indian National Film Awards are much more challenging than any Bollywood awards. They need to compete with films from 23 other language films. Make no mistakes, some of the outstanding films are made in Indian regional languages but not made in Hindi. To get a national award for any Bollywood actors is very very tough and competitive as they will have to compete with so many equally or more outstanding actors of other films. So, many stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan always dislikes the word " Bollywood". They always please to call " Indian Cinema" to include the films made in all languages in Indian include the films made in Hindi. Among the Bollywood actors of present generation, Kamal Hassan (3 times), followed by Amitabh Bachchan (2 times), Mithun Chakraborthy (twice), Ajay Devgan (2 times), Naseeruddin Shah (2 times), Om Puri (twice), Sai Ali Khan (Once) Irfan Khan (Once), Anil Kapoor ( once), Raj Kumar Rao (Once), Nana Patekar (Once), Prakash Raj ( once). Shahrukh, Salman, Ammir, Hrithik or any other actors never got any national award. Among the female actors, Viday Balan, Kangana Ranaut,Priyanka Chopra and Konkona Sen got the award once. But Shabana Azmi got 5 times followed by Smita Patil, and Tabu got two times each.
