RAWALPINDI:
Police on Wednesday obtained 10 more days of physical remand of four suspects involved in the killing of former Punjab law minister’s nephew on the day of the local government elections.

Anti-Terrorism Court-II judge Asif Majid Awan extended remand of Asad Mahmood, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s candidate for chairman union council-86 Dhamial, his father Jan Nisar alias Salem Numberdar, Adil Rehman, and Raja Umer Mazhar Abbasi for 10 more days.

The investigation officer had sought 12 days custody of the suspect for further interrogate in the murder of Shoaib Iqbal Raja, who was allegedly shot dead by Ikhlaq Mahmood, younger brother of the PML-N’s candidate on December 5.

Advocate Sardar Muhammad Ishaq appeared on behalf of the accused and opposed the request arguing that the police had already obtained 20 days physical remand which was enough for interrogation. He further said that it was not a case of terrorism and ATC did not need to grant further remand.

Appearing on behalf of the complainant, Advocate Malik Waheed Anjum said that under the anti-terrorism laws, the investigation officers could obtain up to 90 days of remand. He said that the accused created terror and fear when they opened fire outside a busy polling station on the day of the election.

Separately, the Saddar Berooni police obtained eight days physical remand of another suspect on December 29. Police had arrested Mubashar Fiaz, a cousin of Asad Mahmood and obtained his physical remand.
