MULTAN/PESHAWAR/LAHORE/KARACHI:
Eid Miladun Nabi was celebrated with traditional zeal and religious fervour across the country on Thursday with congregations, mehfil-e-milads and processions in major centres with important buildings, mosques and markets decorated with lights and flags.
In Lahore, celebrations kicked off with special prayers and Quran recitals at mosques city-wide following Fajr for peace, progress and prosperity of the nation and the greater Muslim world. Pakistan Army had earlier presented a 21-gun salute at the Mehfooz Shaheed Garrison to pay homage to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the occasion.
Scores of processions were organised in Lahore, Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Layyah, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan to celebrate the day in a befitting manner.
The central procession taken out in Lahore was led by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) provincial organiser Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar. In Multan, the major rally was organised by Anjuman Islamia and led by Makhdoom Wajahat Hussain Gilani, former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi and others.
Strict security was maintained for the processions with over 2,500 deployed in Multan. The tight security measures paid off in Dera Ghazi Khan where a massive terrorist attack was thwarted by the counter terrorism department. CTD officials said they had received a tip that terrorists were travelling in a vehicle and will be passing through Wadore. When authorities intercepted the vehicle, its occupants opened fire. In the resulting exchange of fire as many as five terrorists were killed while two managed to escape.
In Sindh, hundreds of rallies and congregations were organised across the province to mark Eid Miladun Nabi amid tight security.
Nearly 1,115 programmes relating to the celebrations of Rabiul Awwal 12 and 515 processions and rallies were taken out in Karachi. More than 28,000 police personnel as well as over 8,000 Rangers troops performed security duty on the day.
A similar fervour was witnessed in the districts of Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Nawabshah divisions. Streets and main roads were decorated with green flags. Besides the recitation of naat, rides on camel carts, decorated horses and fireworks also featured in the rallies. However, amid the joy of celebration, an accident in Tando Muhammad Khan left 17 persons injured, with three of them in critical condition.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Eid Miladun Nabi was celebrated peacefully and no untoward incidents were reported. In Peshawar, government offices, streets and mosques were illuminated with a number of processions across the city.
In Mardan, Eid Miladun Nabi was celebrated with the usual zeal and fervour. A procession was held under the supervision of Maulana Muhammad Younas in the Shako Pul area. In Pabbi, the procession was held at Daag Ismail Khel and chaired by Pir Rehmat Kareem.
In Lakki Marwat, the procession concluded amid tightened security. SP Investigation Toheed Khan Gandapur, SHO Arshad Khan and City Police In Charge Saboor Khan followed the procession for security reasons. Processions were taken out in the three districts of Haripur, Abbottabad, and Mansehra.
