Fiery day for Balochistan: Five gas wells blown up

Government offices, NATO tanker, trailer also burnt in separate incidents.

QUETTA:
Five gas wells were blown up by unknown people near the Sui city area in Dera Bugti early on Sunday suspending supply to the main compressor plant.

Talking to The Express Tribune, District Police Officer Dera Bugti, Bashir Ahmed Soomro, said that explosive devices were planted near the gas wells that included well number 24, 33, 46, 82 and 83. The wells and machinery were extensively damaged in the explosions and as a result gas supply to the main plant at Sui gas field was suspended.

Officials said that the blast did not disrupt the supply to any province.

“The incident took place at 2 am and engineers started the repair work after a few hours of the blast which is almost completed,” DPO Bashir Ahmed said.

Banned outfit the Baloch Republican Army (BRA) claimed responsibility for the attack. Calling from an unspecified location, its spokesperson, who introduced himself as Sarbaz Baloch, said that his organisation will carry out such attacks in the future as well.

Meanwhile, two government offices, a Nato container and a trailer were torched in separate incidents in Awaran, Khuzdar and Mastung districts on Sunday. A group of people sprinkled petrol on the district officer’s office and the EDO office and set them ablaze. All official record was lost as a result of the fire, police said.

Separately, unknown armed men intercepted a trailer near RCD highway in district Mastung and set it on fire.

According to the Levies force, the trailer was on its way to Quetta from Karachi and was carrying textile products.  Also on Sunday, a container carrying goods and hardware for Nato forces stationed in Afghanistan was set on fire in district Khuzdar.  The assailants managed to escape from the scene in both cases.
