Out on streets: BZU students protest campus closure

Say it has been closed for three months

Dozens of Bahauddin Zakaria University (BZU) students staged a protest demonstration on Saturday against the closure of the sub-campus.

The students had gathered in front of the Commerce College and staged the protest. They said that their academic sessions had not concluded even after the passage of three years since their admissions.

Omar Gilani, one of the protesters, said that the university administration was using delaying tactics. “They charge Rs35,000 for a four-month semester. However, a semester is usually completed in a year instead of the stipulated time,” he said.

Sultan Rohaila, another student, said that they had studied at the university for three years. “We are not being issued degrees,” he said. He said that the university administration had ignored their requests to issue degrees.

Sajid Khaitran, another student, said that the university administration was planning to merge the Dera Ghazi Khan sub-campus with the Multan campus. “This is unfair. It will be very difficult for us to daily travel to Multan for our classes,” he said. He said that the students would stage more protest demonstrations if the sub-campus was merged.

The protesters appealed to the Higher Education Commission, the chief minister and the governor to take note of the issues facing them.
