KARACHI:
Both SSGC and Karachi Whites came agonisingly close to winning — but wrapped up the day with draws — as the former fell just seven runs short of the 282-run target, while the latter were denied the last wicket required to win their first-round match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy’s Super Eight stage on Thursday.

Karachi Whites resumed their second innings on 188-3 and added 135 runs, aided by Muhammad Waqas’ unbeaten 164-run knock and Faisal Iqbal’s 107, before declaring on 323-5 and setting a target of 282 for SSGC. Muhammad Irfan and Tabish Khan took two wickets each.

In reply, Umar Amin made 91 runs and, along with Usman Liaqat’s 81-run knock, guided SSGC to 275-9 but was unable to see his team through as Karachi’s bowlers stayed firm. By the time the umpires called off play, SSGC were seven runs short of winning the match.

The second and third matches of the day also ended in a stalemate as SNGPL fell 28 runs short of the target set by KRL at Karachi’s National Stadium, while the match between Wapda and Lahore Blues could only reach its third innings by the end of play at the NBP Sports Complex in Karachi.

KRL had resumed their second innings on 202-6 and were able to add 159 runs courtesy Zain Abbas’ 133-run knock to set a 221-run target for SNGPL, who could only manage 193-8 at stumps to draw the match.

Meanwhile, Lahore Blues enforced the follow-on after Wapda, who had resumed their first innings on 228-7, made only 315 in reply to Lahore’s mammoth first-innings total of 511. At the end of play, Wapda were 105-3 in their second innings to draw the match.
