LAHORE:
Zainab Aziz, a 3rd year bachelors of fine arts (BFA) student, and her team painted a wolf holding a child’s shoe in his mouth to depict those responsible for the terrorist attack at the Army Public School.

Aziz’s is among 25 teams, each comprising five to seven students, which participated in a painting competition at the Punjab University College of Art and Design on Tuesday. The teams were given a canvas and asked to choose from two topics for their painting: the terrorist attack at the Army Public School (APS) and the Fall of Dhaka – both events had taken place on December 16 in 2014 and 1971, respectively.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Aziz said her team had picked the figure of a wolf for the terrorists to show that they were beasts. “They [the terrorists] are not humans,” she said. “Only a beast would not care about anything,” she said. The painting also showed books with blood spilled on them and a child standing in front of the wolf.

All but one team chose to paint on the APS attack.

Faria Manal, another participant, said her team had painted random stuff scattered all over the place and a screaming child to depict the devastation caused by the APS attack. She said the use of colour red was meant to show the loss of lives.

She said the attack had left disturbed relatives of those who lost their lives. “We have tried to show their grief,” she said.

Mahnoor Sajid and her three team members painted a fountain with blood flowing out of it instead of water.

The blood signified the loss of lives in terrorist attacks, she said. A garden with full blown trees and dead flowers was set in the background. Sajid, a first year masters of fine arts (MFA) student, said the trees symbolised terrorism and the dead flowers children who had died or suffered because of it.

We have tried to show that the blood flowing out of the fountain feeds the garden. It’s turning it greener, she said.

Only one team chose to paint on the Fall of Dhaka. Hassan Babar, a masters’ of philosophy (MPhil) student, said his team had chosen the topic because it signified a dark age for the country. “Pakistan was divided into two in 1971. We have used the colour black in the painting to highlight the tragedy,” he said. He said a rose was painted to symbolise peace and an army helmet to pay a tribute to the effort of the armed forces.

Teams were allowed till 4pm to finish their paintings. The administration said that winners of the competition would be announced and an exhibition of the paintings arranged in a few days.
