“We need more performances like that,” McClaren told reporters after the game. “We have been inconsistent. It [the win] has answered the critics we have had over last four weeks and it was a great performance in the second half and a great result. That is what we are, a bedrock of discipline and hard work. We have talented players and they know how to win. We just have to do it consistently.”
Mauricio Pochettino’s men, who had been on a club and season-record 14-game unbeaten run since their 1-0 opening day loss to Manchester United, had to endure their first home defeat of the season to a struggling Newcastle as substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic cancelled out Eric Dier’s opener, while another substitute, Ayoze Perez, sealed the win with a stoppage-time volley, leaving Pochettino fuming.

“Our first half was fantastic, we dominated the game,” said the Argentine. “The second is not easy to explain. No-one would expect this end to the game if you see the first half.”
Tottenham have not been able to register a win in the league from the last three games, while Newcastle jumped to 15th, happy with a two-point cushion between them and the relegation zone, where they have spent the majority of the season.
Divock Origi scored his first Premier League goal in the 96th minute to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw in a heated match against West Bromwich Albion on Sunday.
