MULTAN: Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU) has approved four new departments for its Seraiki Area Study Centre (SASC).

The university is now introducing diploma, certificate and degree courses in archaeology, cultural studies and other social sciences, humanities subjects’ linguistics and postcolonial studies.

The new courses will be taught at the university’s Seraiki centre where MPhil classes are to begin shortly, said vice chancellor (VC) Prof Muhammad Zafarullah. The VC told reporters that new departments including archaeology, cultural studies, linguistics and postcolonial studies have already been approved.

The board is looking for faculty members to teach the programmes.

The new centre was inaugurated by Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on January 23, 2010.

The Seraiki centre has been publishing invaluable books and has also initiated several research projects in the year since its inception.

Zafarullah said that SASC’s Fareed chair was conducting research on ‘Fareediyat’ and other related subjects.

The postgraduate Seraiki syllabus has been designed specifically to teach students about the regional customs and heritage. “This training will help students get jobs as well as perform better in government departments including education, NGOs and media organisations,” the VC said.

“BZU is aiming to expand its humanities and social sciences departments to ensure that students receive a well rounded education,” the VC said.
