Recount recant: LHC takes back Afzal Tarar’s victory

The RO recounted the votes and declared Tarar the returned chairman candidate with a margin of 121 votes

LAHORE:

A division bench of the Lahore High Court on Wednesday set aside an order for recounting votes in UC-8, Hafizabad and overturned victory of Afzal Tarar as chairman. The bench headed by Justice Ayesha A Malik restored Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s Mamoon Jafar Tarar’s victory as chairman from the constituency. He had defeated Afzal Tarar in the local government election with a close margin of 26 votes. Tarar of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had earlier challenged the result before the high court and obtained an order for recount. The returning officer recounted the votes and declared Tarar the returned chairman candidate with a margin of 121 votes. Jafar Tarar had assailed the order for a recount and its outcome alleging that the minister had used her influence to swing a victory for her father.
