Paying tribute: Zardari eulogises Taseer’s life and death

Zardari says Taseer has written a new chapter in the history of the PPP's struggle against bigotry and tyranny.

LAHORE:
Eulogising the life of slain Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer, President Asif Ali Zardari said that Taseer has written a new chapter in the history of Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) struggle against bigotry, tyranny and obscurantism. “The life and sacrifice of martyred Taseer is a beacon of light for PPP workers as well as democratic forces in the country,” said President Zardari during his visit to Taseer’s private residence at Cavalry Ground, Lahore on Friday.

The president’s visit to the city was unannounced and he went directly to Taseer’s private residence. He offered his condolences to Taseer’s widow, Amna, and his family, stating that Taseer led a brave, undaunted political life and embraced martyrdom following the tradition set by Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Benazir.

President Zardari eulogised the courage and determination of Taseer in espousing the cause of marginalised sections of society, adding that his readiness to pay the highest price for it would continue to inspire many in the future.

“The supreme sacrifice rendered by Salman Taseer will not go in vain,” the President said.

Underscoring Taseer’s contribution towards fighting against extremism and fanaticism in the country, the president said that PPP workers and democratic forces were proud of Salmaan Taseer’s sacrifice.

“He always called a spade a spade and did not mince words in expressing what he had believed to be true and right,” Zardari added.
