The Karachi police claim to have apprehended on Wednesday two key suspects allegedly involved in the murder of former Punjab law minister Raja Basharat's nephew in Rawalpindi a few days ago.
Raja Shoaib Iqbal, Basharat's nephew, was gunned down and four others were injured in a clash with supporters of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League — Nawaz during the final phase of the local government elections on Saturday. The deceased, who was settled in England, had returned to assist his cousin Raja Moin Sultan — who was running as an independent — with his election campaign when the incident occurred, about half an hour before the end of polling.
The Nazimabad police said that the arrests were made when the police were conducting snap checking in the area.
"The police intercepted the five suspects who were riding motorcycles but instead of stopping, they tried to escape. The police chased them and arrested two suspects, while their three accomplices managed to escape," explained Nazimabad SHO Ejaz Lodhi. The arrested suspects were identified as Adil and Omar, said the officer, adding that the suspects will be handed over to the Rawalpindi police for further questioning as the case against them is registered there.
