PESHAWAR:

A 22-year-old woman filed a complaint against her father and another man for selling and purchasing her respectively, for marriage when she was only six. Both men were subsequently arrested on Wednesday.

Zari, a resident of Peshawar from Kurram Agency, lodged an FIR with Pandhu police station.

“When I was six my father Lawang Shah sold me for Rs50,000 to Khonadas of Jangal Khel, Kohat,” the FIR quoted Zari. “Now that I am 22, Khonadas has made sexual advances at me and has tried to rape me several times.”

The FIR added Shah wants his daughter to submit to Khonadas’ demands. It added Khonadas had already been married four times.

A Pandhu official told The Express Tribune Khonadas and Shah were initially produced before a dispute resolution council (DRC) and eventually put behind bars. “The hearing of the case took place at a DRC in Gulbahar,” he said. “It was decided a case would be registered against Zari’s father and Khonadas.”

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Gulbahar DSP Zarwali Khan said the case was sent to the police by the DRC. “Shah sold two of his daughters as per tribal traditions,” he said. “Khondas originally bought Zari for his son.”

The DSP added Khonadas’ son married someone else because the complainant was a minor. “As a result, Khonadas, who is now 65, expressed a desire to marry Muhammad Zari,” he said.
