UET Taxila convocation: ‘Excellence in science, tech a stepping stone’
Degrees were awarded to graduates of various engineering programmes
Academic excellence in science and technology is a stepping stone for Pakistan towards development and prosperity.
This was said on Tuesday by Punjab Governor Muhammad Rafique Rajwana in his capacity as chancellor of University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Taxila at the 14th Convocation of the varsity, held at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad.
Punjab Minister for Mines and Minerals Chaudhary Sher Ali was the chief guest.
“Brilliant students should do justice to their education and make Pakistan proud by doing extraordinary work in their respective disciplines,” said the Rajwana. He mentioned the opportunities the incumbent government is creating, especially for engineers, by initiating projects such as Pak-China Economic Corridor.
Highlighting the importance of education, he noted the increasing number of schools, colleges and universities being set up by the government.
Chaudhry Sher Ali cited terrorism, the energy crisis, and unemployment as pivotal issues. He advised the youth and academia to play their roles in resolving these problems by designing energy efficient machinery and environmental-friendly buildings to save energy.
On the energy crisis, he lamented that Pakistan is not taking full advantage of its coal reserves.
The minister said the federal government is considering coal-fired power projects to overcome energy crisis by 2017, and is also initiating LNG projects in Punjab and other parts of the country.
Earlier, UET Taxila Vice Chancellor Dr Niaz Ahmad Akhtar had given a welcome address to those present.
He credited UET Taxila for its interactive engineering programmes while simultaneously providing students with excellent academic, sports and co-curricular activities.
He expressed hope that the graduates will play their due part in the socioeconomic development of Pakistan.
Later, Governor Rajwana awarded shields to former UET vice chancellors Dr Sharif Bhatti, Dr Habibullah, Dr Muhammad Javed, and Dr Muhammad Abbas Chaudhry.
He also presented degrees to graduates from the bachelors, masters, and doctoral programmes in engineering.
