ISLAMABAD:

Three suspects in the Imran Farooq murder case have been handed over to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) by the intelligence agencies. A sessions court has approved a daylong transit remand of the suspects, who will now be presented in an anti-terrorism court (ATC).

On Saturday, Moazzam Ali Khan, Khalid Shamim and Mohsin Ali were presented in a district and sessions court in Islamabad amid tight security. Personnel of paramilitary Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and law enforcement agencies were deployed in and around the district courts.

After hearing the arguments, Judicial Magistrate Syed Haider Shah granted the transit remand of the three suspects. Since Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, has been included in the FIR, the suspects will be produced before ATC after the expiry of the remand.

On December 5, the FIA registered a case against MQM chief Altaf Hussain and other party workers for their suspected involvement in the murder of MQM convener Dr Imran Farooq, who was stabbed and bludgeoned to death near his apartment in Green Lane, Edgware, London, in September 2010.

Investigators of the London Metropolitan Police, which has been investigating the assassination, flew into Pakistan in July and September this year to interrogate some suspects arrested by Pakistani security intelligence agencies.

Moazzam, a trader from Karachi who allegedly facilitated two other suspects to go to the UK for killing Farooq, was arrested in March. Khalid and Mohsin were reportedly arrested by the Balochistan Frontier Corps from Chaman, a town bordering Afghanistan.

The FIA’s counter-terrorism wing has registered the case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, including clauses related to conspiracy, assistance, abetment and assassination. Apart from the MQM chief, Muhammad Anwar, Iftikhar Hussain, Moazzam, Khalid, Mohsin and Kashif Kamran have been nominated in the FIR. All these MQM members have already been grilled by the Scotland Yard.
