Farmers demand agricultural sector be given to centre
Sindh Abadgar Board and Sindh Chamber of Agriculture depicts a portentous outlook for farming sector
HYDERABAD:
Two major groups lobbying for farmer's rights in Sindh have joined forces against the Sindh government, demanding that it should cede authority of the agriculture sector to the centre.
The Sindh Abadgar Board and Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA), at a press conference on Saturday, depicted a portentous outlook for the farming sector if it continued to remain within the provincial purview.
"Agriculture is a federal subject in most countries but here it's been devolved to the provinces," said Abdul Majeed Nizamani, the board's president.
Since the devolution, farmers have expressed resentment through protests over the provincial government's agricultural policies, especially pertaining to official crop prices. But the demand, which is going to broach a controversial constitutional debate, is likely to face disapproval from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government on autonomy. The former PPP federal government had devolved the subject to the provinces through the 18th constitutional amendment.
