Insaf Doctors Forum (IDF) is trying to break the ice between the government and doctors who are protesting against the implementation of the Medical and Teaching Institutions (MTI) Reforms Act 2015.
Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH) IDF general secretary Dr Mudeer said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairperson Imran Khan has tasked IDF to mediate between the doctors associations and the government, bringing them together and finding a suitable solution to the issue. “We are in close contact with different associations and the majority of doctors are in favour of the MTI act. However, there are some points where we still have some resistance,” said Mudeer.
He added during a general body meeting held recently, the KTH faculty opted for institutional-based practice (IBP). He said 70% faculty members including senior doctors opted for IBP and consultants extended their support to implement the MTI act, adding professors also explained various aspects of the act and updated the faculty.
Mudeer said a five-member committee was constituted, members of which communicated with the government as well as with the board of governors for rights of the doctors. He said they designated Saturday as a weekly off. The committee also decided even if the doctors opt for IBP now, the decision could be revoked on a later date. However, it will be a final decision for those who opted to practice outside of the hospital.
The KTH faculty meeting announced to hold awareness seminars for the consultants who opted for IBP in other hospitals of the province, including Hayatabad Medical Complex, Lady Reading Hospital and Ayub Teaching Hospital in the near future.
With almost everything resolved, IDF urged the protesting doctors to withdraw the cases filed in the court so that the act is implemented across the province. Postgraduate Medical Institution Teaching Association and Nursing Association withdrew their petition from Peshawar High Court against the MTI act.
