From Entourage to Avengers 2, 15 summer blockbusters to watch out for!

Summer is the busiest time of the year at the box office and we are honoured to see some of the best and most entertaining movies of the year.

This year should be no different and there is already a great line-up of movies coming our way in the coming months. Here’s my pick of the 15 movies that cannot be missed:

15.  Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Sundance is known to bring out some great films – last year Whiplash and Boyhood both came from Sundance and became major Oscar contenders. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl was the talk of the Sundance festival this year and won a top prize as well. Critics have already hailed it as a masterpiece, so this may be a movie you won’t want to miss.

14. Aloha

Granted, Cameron Crowe has failed to follow the success of his earlier films, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, but his latest one, Aloha, has all the makings of a comeback for the writer-director. The drama-comedy is set to come out in May and features an all-star cast with the likes of Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, Rachel McAdams, Alec Baldwin, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Jay Baruchel.

Cooper has been on a hot streak as of late, taking home four successive Academy Award nominations in the last three years, and this film could put him in the running again.

13. Ant Man

Virtually anything Marvel creates turns out to be a super hit these days, so it would be pretty disappointing if its latest venture Ant Man proves to be anything less. The movie has faced a number of difficulties since it went into production. Edgar Wright was originally expected to direct it but he left the project, star Patrick Wilson also left the film following Wright’s exit, and eventually, Marvel settled with a relatively inexperienced director in Peyton Reed.

However, the talent involved is heartening, and apart from Paul Rudd taking the titular role, it also features the likes of Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Pena and John Slattery.

12. Southpaw

Jake Gyllenhaal delivered an absolutely sensational performance in Nightcrawler but was sadly snubbed for an Oscar nomination, so the Academy could compensate that snub if he delivers another powerhouse performance in Southpaw.

Southpaw has created plenty of awards season buzz already with Gyllenhaal beefing up significantly to play the role of troubled boxer, Billy Hope. In addition, Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is directing, Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is scripting, and the cast features the likes of Forest Whittaker, Rachel McAdams and 50 Cent.

11. Tomorrowland

Brad Bird has a very good track-record as director and all three of his films – The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – have been both critical and commercial successes.

His latest film, Tomorrowland seems very intriguing by the looks of it and Bird himself has kept the details to a bare minimum. George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are starring along with newcomer Britt Robertson with the script penned by Bird and Lost writer Damon Lindelof.

10. Terminator Genisys

Even though the trailer brought a highly divisive reaction among fans, it’s impossible not to be excited about the Terminator reboot. Arnie’s back, Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke is playing Sarah Conner, Jason Clarke has been cast as John Conner along with Jai Courtney, Matt Smith and Academy Award winner JK Simmons. Game of Thrones and Thor: The Dark World director, Alan Taylor is directing the film.

The producers have said the film will act as both a prequel and sequel to the previous films while involving alternate timelines as well. Expect a very Days of Future Past-like treatment.

9. Mad Max: Fury Road

The Mad Max franchise is another one of the many reboots to come out this summer. Tom Hardy takes over Mel Gibson’s role as the titular character and Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult are also in the mix. George Miller is back on the director’s chair as he was a part of the team for the previous films as well. Although this movie hasn’t generated the same hype as The Avengers or Furious 7, it looks very promising and invigorating judging by the trailer.

8. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation

Tom Cruise is easily one of the biggest stars on the planet and has been for quite some time, and the Mission Impossible franchise is known to bring the best out of him. Hence, the latest entry in the franchise, Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation should have you excited as well. Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Edge of Tomorrow) is writing and directing, and along with Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames return while Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin are the newest additions to the cast.

7. Jurassic World

Twenty-two years ago, Steven Spielberg completely changed the blockbuster genre with the introduction of Jurassic Park. The film was a game-changer and has since been the benchmark for every film that uses Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI). Twenty-two years later, rookie director Colin Trevorrow looks to resurrect the franchise as he directs a cast of Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Omar Sy, Jake Johnson, Ty Simpkins and Vincent D’Onofrio in this reboot of the hit franchise. Even though many people are sceptical whether it will deliver or not, the anticipation remains quite high.

6. Avengers: Age of Ultron

Do I even need to explain why?

Ever since The Avengers came out, people have anxiously been waiting for the sequel, because no matter how many solo movies Marvel makes, nothing beats having the whole gang together. Joss Whedon is back in the director’s chair, as are ‘The Avengers’ (obviously). Joining them are Aaron-Taylor Johnson as Quicksilver, Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch and James Spader as the villainous Ultron.

Expectations are extremely high for this one, let’s hope it delivers.

5. Pan

Peter Pan is the latest Disney fairy tale to get a live-action makeover. British director Joe Wright (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement) is directing and we have Hugh Jackman in a colourful role as the villain Blackbeard to Levi Miller's Peter Pan, so this could be one of those rare occasions when an old fairy tale actually makes a good live-action movie.

4. Inside Out

Can you believe there was no Pixar movie in 2014?

Neither can I.

Inside Out is the latest Pixar production to hit the screens which is enough to have us excited. The film will be screened at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival before making it to the theatres. The voice cast is great and features the likes of Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Mindy Kaling, Kyle MacLachan, with the script penned by Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt, while Up and Monsters, Inc. director Pete Doctor is directing.

3. Entourage

While the fans of the HBO series will definitely be excited to see Vince Chase and his cronies take on Hollywood again (especially after that abysmal final season), it's unclear whether the film will connect with general audiences as well.

Just like the show, the movie is loaded with special appearances from people like Mark Wahlberg, Armie Hammer, Pharrell Williams, Gary Busey, Kelsey Grammer, Billy Bob Thorton, Calvin Harris, Liam Neeson, Ronda Rousey and Jessica Alba. The original cast is returning and series creator Doug Ellin is handling both writing and directing duties.

2. Ted 2

Seth McFarlane has had a very inconsistent record as director thus far. His first movie, Ted was a massive hit because it was funny and surprisingly heart-warming. His second feature, A Million Ways To Die in the West was the exact opposite, an unfunny and disgusting comedy that wasted it's talented cast. So it's unclear exactly which category Ted 2 will fall under, but nevertheless, Mark Wahlberg is back while Morgan Freeman, Amanda Seyfried and Liam Neeson have also boarded the sequel.

1. Fantastic 4

After the success of the X-Men franchise, Fox decided it was high time they brought back The Fantastic 4 as well. After the colossal missteps that the previous films turned out to be, they have decided to do something different this time around and therefore gone with a younger cast and different take on the heroes all together.

Miles Teller, hot off his wonderful performance in Whiplash, is set to play Reed Richards, Kate Mara will play The Invisible Woman, Michael B Jordan is The Human Torch, Jamie Bell is The Thing and Toby Kebbell has been cast as Dr Doom while Chronicle director Josh Trank is directing and X-Men scribe Simon Kinberg is scripting.
