LAHORE: In a bid to improve the commuting experience of passengers and arrest its declining reputation, Pakistan Railways has upgraded its Lahore-Karachi bound Karakoram Express with value-added features.

“The up-gradation of Karakoram Express is part of our commitment to introduce three similar trains as per Green Line train standards,” said Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique, while inaugurating the train on Tuesday at the Lahore Railways Station. The remaining two value-added trains will also be inaugurated within this financial year, he added.

The train will have a total seating capacity of 1,130, including three air-conditioned Business class coaches, 12 economy class coaches, along with a dining car, brake van and a power plant. The duration of the journey will be around 18 hours.

Karakoram Express was considered a profit-making train as it met its time and passenger limits. “We are offering some new features like a Wifi connection, LED televisions, private cabins in economy class, Muslim shower in toilets and janitorial services which are outsourced to a private party.

“Unlike Green line train, in which catering and bedding was a default feature, these facilities are optional in Karakoram Express and commuters can avail this service on additional payments.”

Fares were also revised for Karakoram Express, though the increase is nominal.
