LAHORE:

The Higher Education Department (HED) has called for applications for four vacant posts of vice chancellors (VCs) at public universities.

The universities are: the Punjab University (PU), the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU), the University of Sargodha (UoS) and the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Engineering and Technology (MNS-UET) Multan. The applications were sought through an advertisement published on November 4 (Wednesday). They are to be submitted within 30 days of publication of the advertisement – December 4, 2015.

The candidates should be not more than 65 years old on December 4, 2015; should have 12 years or more teaching experience at a university recognised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC); have at least 15 publications in HEC-recognised research journals; and management experience. Only women candidates are eligible to apply for the Lahore College for Women University.

The tenure of PU VC Mujahid Kamran ends on January 22. Dr Kamran is seeking a third term for the post.

According to the conditions of the HED, he is still eligible to apply for the position for a third time.

A PU spokesman confirmed to The Express Tribune that Dr Kamran would be applying for the position for another term as the vice chancellor of the Punjab University.

The MNS-UET, the Lahore College for Women University and the University of Sargodha position were advertised in April along with seven other universities. However, no appointments were made for the four universities. Uzma Qureshi is currently working as acting the Lahore College for Women University vice chancellor.

Dr Akram Chaudhry, the University of Sargodha VC, whose tenure ended on October 12, was also a candidate for reappointment.

However, having attained the age of 65 he is no longer eligible to apply. Currently, Pro VC Muhammad Zahoorul Hassan Dogar is given the acting charge of the office.

When contacted, HED Deputy Secretary (Universities) Barakullah Khan told The Express Tribune that no deadline could be given for completing the hiring process as yet.
