KATHMANDU:

An Indian national was killed Monday when Nepal police fired into a crowd of protesters who were trying to block a border checkpoint, a spokesman said.

"Police warned the protesters to disperse but they did not listen, compelling security forces to open fire," said Nepal police spokesperson Kamal Singh Bam.

"An Indian national was wounded and died after being taken to hospital."

Four police suffered injuries in clashes with demonstrators at the checkpoint in the southern town of Birgunj, around 90 kilometres (55 miles) south of Kathmandu, Bam told AFP.

Nepal police clear border blockade by force

He could not confirm if any other civilians were injured in the violence.

Police earlier used batons to disperse protesters angered by Nepal's new constitution who had blocked the bridge crossing in Birgunj since September 24, cutting off vital supplies and forcing fuel rationing in the landlocked Himalayan nation.

The protesters are from Nepal's Madhesi ethnic minority, who mainly live in the southern plains. They say the internal borders laid out under a federal system in the new constitution will leave them politically marginalised.

Nepal police firing kills five protesters

More than 40 people have been killed in clashes between police and people protesting against the constitution, which was introduced in September after a deadly earthquake pushed warring political parties to reach agreement.

The fuel crisis has soured ties between Nepal and its powerful neighbour, with authorities in Kathmandu accusing New Delhi of imposing an "unofficial blockade" to show its dissatisfaction with the new constitution.

New Delhi denies the charge and has urged dialogue with the protesting Madhesis, who have close cultural, linguistic and family ties to Indians living across the border.

Sanjog | 8 years ago | Reply Why more than 200 Indian trucks were able to cross the border while single Nepali truck was not allowed? What the local BJP leaders are doing in the protest? Why are they sending Indian young boys to block petroleum and other essentials like medicine to Nepal mean time Nepalese Gurkhas are protecting Indian border with Pakistan? And, you tell me madeshi people are happy to welcome Indians in our internal politics. If any of you guys who are mocking nonsense in tabloids about Nepali government not being able to solve problem and asking the government to resign, then what do you guys propose? How can the government function properly if you cut its wings and monetary source. Government is saying they will solve issue as soon as possible with maximum flexibility. But, Madeshi leaders keep on saying 2 states and they also say they will not accept sanghya ayyog (Fedral committe) .And, they say montain plain shouldn't be connected to Terai plane? Do you guys even know our geographical condition?? Now, say me, how can we solve problem? Its always easy to blame the government. Congratulations! guys you are doing a great job, A person is dead, and all you care about is oil. What do you make of Indian police killing it's own citizen in Punjab? What do you make of Indian police draggingg a nepali to it's boarder and beating him up near to death? Ok, so this indian boy was innocent huh, then what was he doing in Nepali boarder side ? Just recently two Indians were captured in an attempt to kill one of our minister. And you tell me India has saftey concerns. Such a double standard. India have modified it's constitution more than 70 times and you blame us for the first time when we decide to be seculer. Even a kid in Nepal know that who is orchestering the protest.
Tyggar | 8 years ago | Reply @John: Lol, you have no idea about nepal do you. The brahmins are anti india. The lower caste i.e the Madhesis are pro india. As far as the oil deal with China, India is least bothered. how do you think China is going to transport oil across himalayas? By air? Have you any idea about the terrain?
