KARACHI: The hard work of the science general and pre-engineering candidates appearing for the Intermediate exams finally paid off as results were announced on Friday.

Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, (BIEK) chairperson Akhtar Ghori, accompanied by examinations controller Imran Chishti and chief guest commissioner Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui, announced the results of science general and pre-engineering batches. The results were announced before the expected date, which was earlier scheduled for September 15.

Science general group

The first two positions were bagged by the students of DA Degree College for Women, Phase VIII. Amna Aslam secured the first position with 87 per cent marks, while her classmate, Aiman Muneer, made it to the second slot with 84.82 per cent marks.

"Hard work always pays off," said Sana Habib, who secured the third position with 84.45 per cent marks. She is the daughter of a crane operator in Gulshan-e-Hadeed. "I used to take tuitions but [also] believed in myself." She added that she wants to pursue her studies and make her parents proud.

According to Chishti, a total 2,287 candidates had registered themselves in the science general group while 2,250 appeared in the exams. The pass percentage was 43.87. Only 17 students managed to get an A1 grade while 5.47 per cent secured the A grade. As many as 290 students cleared their exams with B grade while 399 candidates received a D grade.

Pre-engineering group

Like any other results, female students bagged the top positions in pre-engineering group as well. Adoos Khalid of the BAMM PECHS Government College for Women secured the first position with 90.91 per cent marks. Bahria College Karsaz student Urooj Nabi Dar stood second with 90.82 per cent marks.

Adamjee Government Science College's Muhammad Hassan, was the only male who managed to secure a top position in this year's Matriculation and Intermediate examinations. Hassan secured the third position with 90.55 per cent marks. He was happy to represent males in the hall. "I think it is all about how you study, not about being a boy or a girl," said Hassan, who wants to study mechanical engineering from NED University.

According to the results announced by the examinations controller, 31,241 candidates registered for the Intermediate part II pre-engineering exams, with 23,238 males and 8,003 females. The pass percentage of Intermediate pre-engineering was 45.42 per cent this year, added Chishti. A total 1,233 students managed to get the A1 grade, 2,765 candidates secured the A grade. The B grade was secured by 11.98 per cent students while 13.29 per cent got the C grade in their final examination.

Cash prize

The BIEK chairperson also distributed cash prizes among the top three position holders. "We want to appreciate their effort and want them to be motivated for further studies," he said. The first position holders from both pre-engineering and science general groups were awarded Rs50,000, while Rs30,000 and Rs20,000 were given to the second and third position holders, respectively.
