LAHORE:

The government has failed to maintain order. It should resign if it cannot control its officials, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) provincial organiser Chaudhry Muhammad Sarwar said on Tuesday.

He was addressing PTI workers, who had gathered near Lahore Press Club to express solidarity with the lawyers’ community on the Daska incident.

Several party leaders, including Abdul Aleem Khan, Punjab Assembly opposition leader Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed and MPAs Sadia Sohail and Mian Aslam, took part in the protest. The protesters chanted slogans against the government.

“Had the government focused on recruiting police on merit and not under political influence, we would not have witnessed the Daska incident. The department has suffered greatly due to the interference of MPAs and MNAs,” Sarwar said.

He said in 30 years of ruling the country, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz had failed to reform police and thaana culture. He said the government’s announcement to form an inquiry committee to investigate the killings was an empty promise. “It will only absolve the main culprits. In the police report on Model Town incident, too, the principal accused were given a clean chit,” he said.

Sarwar said the government had failed to deliver. “The Punjab government should learn from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government which has introduced reforms in all departments. It has taken steps to depoliticise police,” he said.

He said the PTI supported the lawyers’ protest against the government. Later, he said that the appointment of party’s district level organisers and coordinators was underway.

PTI leader Farrukh Javed Moon said that the Daska incident reflected poor governance. “Had the government taken to task the Gullu Butts responsible for the Model Town incident, we would not have seen the murder of two lawyers in Daska,” he said.

Moon said that the PML-N should allow others to govern if it could not provide justice and security to citizens.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Ejaz Chaudhry visited Daska and met with the families of the deceased lawyers. In a statement, he said: “The incident reflects the mentality of Punjab Police. This is not the first time we have seen such criminal behaviour.”
