While chairing the 14th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy in Islamabad on Friday, the premier gave an approval to convert power plants running on diesel and furnace oil to LNG.
Expressing concerns over the suspected irregularities in the purchase of land for Diamer-Bhasha project, he directed formation of a parliamentary committee to hold an inquiry into the matter and to ensure that land acquisition for the project should be completed before August 2015.
He also asked Chairman Wapda to present a comprehensive project proposal with timelines in the next meeting of the committee.
Nawaz also directed concerned authorities to look into the possibility of increased supply of gas to Guddu power plants which could add more than 700MW of electricity by October this year.

Earlier, Secretary Water and Power deliberated on ‘load management and recoveries’.
The meeting was informed that this year, load-shedding in urban areas on average stood at six hours while in rural areas, the outages have increased to eight hours with the exception of areas where recoveries are too low. On industrial feeders, he added, load-shedding this year on average has been four hours a day.

The secretary also apprised the meeting on access to solar power in rural Balochistan and installation of subsidised tube-wells in the province.
Minister for Petroleum, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi briefed the meeting on the progress on LNG-based power plants.
Sharing further information, Chairman WAPDA updated on the matters pertaining to Diamer-Bhasha hydel power generation project.
