KARACHI:

It took a long time for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan’s motorcade to reach Jinnah Ground. But when it did, it was merely touch-and-go.

After a week full of promises of addressing PTI supporters at Azizabad — an area considered home ground for the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) — Khan did a short walk from the Hussainabad gate with his wife, Reham Khan.

The PTI chief was scheduled to offer prayers for the MQM martyrs at Yadgar-e-Shuhda monument and then address the party supporters from a small stage set up for the occasion but he returned to his car after a short walk. According to PTI’s Khurram Sher Zaman, there were security threats but Khan walked the grounds just to bring his supporters out of fear.

“We offered fateha from there,” Zaman told The Express Tribune, referring to the entrance where Khan stood. He explained that Khan was unable to reach the monument due to the presence of a large number of people. Zaman appreciated the support they received from the MQM leaders and believed that their supporters are not afraid anymore. “This is an example for the people of Karachi.”
