HYDERABAD: After the lapse of almost a decade, the residents of Cantonment Board of Hyderabad (CBH) will exercise their vote to elect their local government representatives on April 25.

As many as 40,882 residents are registered to vote in the 10 wards of the CBH. The largest ward, No. 10, has a total of 11,028 voters while there are just 954 voters in the smallest ward, No. 6. It comprises mostly of people in Civil Lines and Defence areas. The remaining eight wards have eligible voters ranging between 2,000 to over 6,000. The military establishments with 3,817 eligible voters fall in the third ward.

The residents will elect 10 councilors who will later elect a vice-president from among themselves along with one minority and one woman representative on the two reserved seats. The CBH's representative body will comprise 25 members, including 12 elected members, 12 CBH nominated members and Hyderabad garrison's station commander will head the body as its president.

A total of 285 nomination forms were submitted by March 31. "The actual number of contesting candidates is expected to decrease drastically following withdrawal of candidates and rejections during the scrutiny," said a CBH official while talking to The Express Tribune. "Many candidates have filled forms for multiple constituencies and they will also withdraw."

The nominations will be scrutinised from April 2 to April 4, followed by appeals against acceptance or rejection, disposal of appeals and withdrawal of candidature from April 6 to April 10.

The elections were earlier planned to be held on non-party basis. However, after the Lahore High Court's order, the CBH is likely to hold party-based elections. The CBH sources claimed that they expect that the Election Commission of Pakistan will issue a notification in this regard soon. "On April 11, the final list of contesting candidates will be displayed," said the official. "It is very likely that it will contain the party symbols."
