KARACHI: The delimitation process of Sindh’s union councils (UCs) will start on May 20, acting provincial commissioner Tanveer Zaki told The Express Tribune on Sunday. “The local government elections are scheduled on September 20 for Sindh and we will issue the final notification of the delimitation by July 28,” he said, adding that district-level committees had been formed for this purpose. When asked about the provincial government’s role in this process, he said that it would be the responsibility of the election commission, as the Sindh government had handed over these powers to it through legislation. There are around 1,100 UCs in Sindh, out of which 178 fall in the six districts of Karachi. In 2013, the delimitation was carried out by the provincial government. It was challenged by political parties in court, after which the Supreme Court directed the Sindh government to legislate on the issue, devolving the powers to the election commission.
