KARACHI: A district and sessions court sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Saturday for strangling a woman to death.

Mehboob Ali was found guilty of killing his neighbour, Aliya, during a theft bid in November 2009. According to the prosecution, the convict barged into her house with the intention to steal. However, Aliya saw him while he was collecting valuables and gold ornaments from her house. She tried to shout for help but Ali silenced her and strangled her to death. He rushed back to his house and told his wife, Quratul Ain, not to disclose it to anyone.

The deceased woman's husband, Navid, however, lodged a complaint against Ali and Ain on suspicion. During interrogation, Ain revealed that her husband had threatened to kill her if she told anyone about his crime. She offered to become approver which was accepted and she testified against her husband before the court.

After scrutinising the evidence, Central additional district and sessions judge Rashida Siddiqi convicted the man of the offence.

The case had been registered at the Nazimabad police station under section 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
