Investigations: Factory manager’s killer sent to police custody

A case has been registered against Abdul Raheem on extortion charges.

KARACHI:

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) remanded on Tuesday an alleged extortionist who killed a factory supervisor in New Karachi over his refusal to pay the money.

The suspect, Abdul Raheem, was sent on a 14-day physical remand after police produced him before the ATC-II and contended that he was arrested from Gabol Town after his mother, Rabia Bibi, identified him through the CCTV camera footage, aired by media channels.

The prosecution told the court that the suspect, identifying himself as a Sunni Tehreek worker, had approached the Islam Designer factory supervisor, Saleemuddin, on January 7 and asked him for extortion money. He was accompanied by three of his accomplices, identified as Ahmed Hassan, the alleged ringleader, Ayaz and Anwar. The suspect fired shots at Saleemuddin after the victim had asked him to come later as the factory owner was not available.

Earlier on Monday, the police had produced the suspect, wearing a black mask, before media. During the press conference the suspect had confessed to murdering Saleemuddin and narrated the scene of the killing.

A case has been registered against him and his absconding accomplices under Section 384 (extortion), 385 (putting person in fear of injury to commit extortion), 302 (murder), 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act.  The court has fixed February 10 for the next hearing.
