SUKKUR:

A woman was within minutes of being shot to death over the pretext of karo-kari if the Shikarpur police had not reached the Yar Muhammad Jatoi village in time on Sunday night.

The incident took place within the limits of the Lakhi Ghulam Shah police station when a villager called the police and told them that Irfan Ali Jatoi had locked his wife, Irshad Khatoon, in a room and had threatened to kill her for being 'kari'.

SHO Ghulam Ali Brohi reached Jatoi's residence and managed to rescue the woman while her husband managed to escape.

When produced before the court of a civil judge, Irshad claimed that her husband had declared her 'kari' with one of his guests, a man identified as Ghulam Hussain Jaffery and wanted to kill her. She said that she was not safe in her husband's house anymore and opted to reside at a Darul Amman. The judge ordered the police to take her to the Darul Amman in Larkana.

Some sources claimed that Irfan Jatoi was a habitual gambler and lost his wife in a bet to Jaffery a few nights ago. When Jaffery came over to claim his winnings, Irfan Jatoi declared him a 'karo' and his wife a 'kari'. He locked her in a room at their house while Jaffery fled.

Others believe that Irfan Jatoi had falsely accused his wife and Jaffery as he wanted the latter's money and land.
