KARACHI: Police claim to have recovered prize bonds worth around Rs10 million on the basis of information provided by the suspects involved in the robbery at the Edhi Centre in October, earlier this year.
Meanwhile, 50 suspects were detained in targeted raids in different parts of the city on Tuesday. On October 19, a group of armed robbers had stormed into the head office of the Edhi Foundation in Mithadar and held the philanthropist, Abdul Sattar Edhi, and his employees hostage. They had fled with millions of rupees worth of valuables.
Earlier on December 16, the District South police had arrested four men involved in the robbery. The suspects were identified as Muhammad Saleem, a former driver at the Edhi Foundation, Jamshed, the mastermind behind the robbery, Imranullah and Muhammad Ali. Meanwhile, the police was looking for three more suspects, including a former employee of the Edhi Foundation, who is currently associated with another welfare organisation.
"We found the prize bonds in Jamshed's house in Model Colony. Earlier we had recovered prize bonds, cash and gold worth Rs25 million," District South police chief DIG Abdul Khalique Shaikh told The Express Tribune. "So far, we have managed to recover around Rs35 million from the total Rs100 million," he added. He said that the police was making efforts to arrest the remaining three accused involved in the Edhi Foundation robbery and recover the remaining looted prize bonds, cash and gold.
Separately, around 35 suspects were detained during a targeted raid conducted by the police in Gizri. The entire locality was cordoned off during the operation and no one was allowed to go in or out during the operation. Police officials said that the operation was conducted on a tip-off regarding the presence of wanted criminals. According to police sources, many of the detained suspects were released after they were cleared during the initial interrogation.
Separately, at least eleven suspects were detained during targeted raids conducted in parts of SITE. The raids were conducted by SITE Town police whose officials claim to have apprehended 11 suspects, including street criminals, robbers and drug peddlers. Meanwhile, a notorious gangster - Naeem Lahoti, of a Lyari-based gang, was reportedly arrested along with three of his accomplices during a targeted operation by intelligence and law enforcement agencies in the outskirts of the city. Lahoti was wanted by the police in several cases, including the murder of Pakistan Peoples Party city area president, Hassan Soomro.
