A glimpse into the world of Pakistani powerhouses

December 23, 2014

What sparked your interest in the fashion and beauty industry?

I was always inclined towards hair styling. When I was young, I would style my dolls’ hair and by the end of the day, they would barely have any. I have enjoyed styling since then and I have now been in this industry for 22 years, since January 1992!

Trends and styles are constantly changing and people want to have the latest look when it comes to hairstyles. How do you manage to keep your clientele satisfied?

I have clients who have been with me for the past 20 years and as styles change, we change. Without any hesitation, I tell them that I have become bored of doing the same thing, so I change their look from say, long to short hair and so on.

What is the most important thing to keep in mind before styling a client?

I keep everything in mind, from the client’s personality to whether they will be able to carry the look or not. I must know what their outlook towards life is and what suits them.

What is the hardest part about working in the beauty industry?

Thankfully, I haven’t had a rough time in the industry. However, other members from the industry tend to resent you which isn’t good.

How would you encourage women to become successful entrepreneurs?

One can’t become successful overnight but women can become better entrepreneurs through hard work and perseverance.

How has the Pakistani beauty industry changed over the past years?

Earlier, there were hardly any stylists other than Nabila, myself and a few others. Now, there is a lot more scope. There are a lot more versatile and creative new people in the industry now.

You’ve already styled an impressive roster of celebrities in your career. Is there anyone else that you would like to work with in the future?

I have already worked with all of them and fortunately, they all came to me out of their own accord.

What are some of your favourite hair products/tools?

My scissors are the most essential appliance for me. I don’t really have any particular products that I prefer but the Harmony contouring powder by MAC is really good.

Who has inspired you the most throughout your career?

My work is my inspiration because all I have been doing since the past 22 years is hair and make-up. That can become monotonous even if I am doing different styles on different people but it just doesn’t get old for me!

Is there any room for improvement for the Pakistani beauty industry?

Yes, there is a lot of room for growth! As the industry improves, there is scope for improvement in styling too.

Any advice to young women aspiring to work in the beauty industry?

They need to be persistent and keep looking forward.
